Many painters prefer using mineral spirits as an alternative to turpentine. These chemical products are mostly used when thinning paints and in cleaning paint brushes. They are also used in degreasing machines and levers. Compared to turpentine, mineral spirits are more effective and gives better results.
Mineral spirits are classified into three different classes; 1, 2 and 3. Class 1 has a high burn temperature or flashpoint compared to the other two. Due to this property, Class 1 products are known to have a low volatility rating. Class 2 spirits, on the other hand, have a low flashpoint compared to the previous one. Finally, Class 3 products have a very high volatility rating but the lowest flash point when compared to the other two classes.
Mineral spirits are classified as mild dermal irritants by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). The products are also highly flammable and produce toxic gases when they burn. Therefore, any mineral spirits should be handled and stored with care at all times.
A paint thinner is used when removing oil based paints on any surface. A variety of thinners exist in the market. However, not all of them serve the same purpose. Since the thinners are higher flammable and are known to produce toxic gases, caution should be exercised when handling them.

When working with a lacquer thinner, turpentine is also used. Turpentine is got from pine trees although crude oil can also produce the same. The liquid contains chemical components that react negatively with body tissues like the skin. Thus, always have protective clothing when handling it. Turpentine is also flammable and can cause a lot of damage when it comes into contact with fire. It should therefore always be kept away from all combustibles and oxidizing agents.
Acetone is another component that is used in making thinners. The chemical is produced by the human body and animals during the normal body functions. It is a colorless liquid and has many uses apart from the common one of making thinners. The chemical is mostly used by women when cleaning their nails since it easily polishes and removes any dirt layer around the nails. The chemical is known to have a low toxic rating. However, one can feel some respiration irritation when exposed to it for long.
Toluene is found in crude oil and Tolu tree. It is used in making fingernail polish and adhesives. Another use, although not very common, is in making lacquer thinners. When exposed to the body for long, the chemical can easily affect the kidneys and the respiratory organs. This makes one feel dizzy and weak and may easily paralyze the body internal functions of the body tissues if precaution is not taken.
All kinds of thinners work well when used as directed. Therefore, it is always important to read the user manual and work as directed by the experts. This way, you will be able to avoid being affected negatively by the product. Caution should always be exercised when one is handling any chemicals.

Acetone is a colorless liquid that easily dissolves in water. It is found in plants and natural gases that roam freely. The liquid can also be got from body fat when it is broken down and all the components separated. Once manufactured, it is used in making medicines, plastics, and many chemical components, for example lacquer thinner. It is also commonly used in making nail polish.
